At First Presbyterian Church, we believe that faith calls us not only to care for one another within our church family, but also to extend Christ’s love to our neighbors—near and far. Jesus reminds us, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and we take that command to heart. Through our outreach ministries, we seek to meet real needs, build meaningful relationships, and offer hope in tangible ways.
One of the central ways we live out this calling is through the FPC Food Pantry and the Community Dinners.
FPC Food Pantry
The FPC Food Pantry is a ministry of compassion and dignity, offering free, healthy food to individuals and families facing food insecurity in the Metuchen/Edison area. We welcome all—regardless of race, color, religion, age, ability, gender, or national origin—because we believe everyone deserves nourishment and care.
The mission of the food pantry is
- To offer healthy food in a dignified way to those in need in the Metuchen/Edison area.
- To strengthen our community by creating opportunities for service and generosity.
- To educate our guests and the public about hunger-related issues and available resources.
Our pantry is more than a place to receive food. It’s part of a broader journey toward stability and independence. Whether someone is in crisis or simply needs a helping hand, we’re here to walk alongside them. At the food pantry
- We provide nutritious groceries in a respectful, welcoming environment.
- Volunteers from our church, local schools, businesses, Scout Troops, and other community groups help stock shelves, greet guests, and distribute food.
- Donors—both individuals and organizations—are the heartbeat of this ministry, making it possible through generous gifts of food and funds.
We trust that God equips us with everything we need to serve others faithfully. The Food Pantry is one way we put our faith into action, sharing the love of Christ through hospitality, generosity, and care.
Community Dinners
Each month from September through June, First Presbyterian Church opens its doors—and its kitchen—to offer a free, home-cooked meal to our neighbors. We call it The Welcome Table, and that name says it all: everyone is welcome here.
Whether you come for the delicious food, the friendly conversation, or simply a place to feel seen and cared for, there’s a seat for you. No religious affiliation is required—just bring your appetite and your presence.
To find out the next gathering date and time, please call the church office, keep an eye on the Sunday bulletin, or check out the church online calendar here. We’d love to welcome you.
Community & Food Pantry Garden
At First Presbyterian Church, we believe that tending to the earth and caring for one another go hand in hand. Our Community and Food Pantry Garden is a joyful expression of both.
Since 2018, the Community Garden has offered a space for neighbors to come together, share their love of gardening, and grow side by side—especially for those who may not have access to garden space at home. It’s a place of fellowship, learning, and connection.
In 2020, we expanded this mission with the Food Pantry Garden, where volunteers plant, nurture, and harvest fresh produce for our FPC Food Pantry. This ministry helps ensure that our pantry guests receive not only shelf-stable items, but also healthy, homegrown fruits and vegetables.
Together, these gardens provide meaningful ways for community members to serve, grow, and connect—with the land and with each other. Whether you're an experienced gardener or simply curious to dig in, there's a place for you here.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Since 2008, our Prayer Shawl Ministry has offered comfort and care through hand-knit and crocheted shawls, lovingly created by church members. The group meets monthly to share fellowship and stitch together—no experience needed, and guidance is always available.
Shawls are given to anyone in need of warmth, healing, or celebration. It’s a gentle, meaningful way we share God’s love.
If you’d like to join, please watch the Sonday bulletin for the meeting times and location, check out the church calendar here, or contact the church office at (732) 491-2300 for more information. All are welcome.
CARE Team
Our Deacons, with support from pastoral staff, lovingly care for members who are homebound or facing illness. Though they may be unable to gather in person, their connection to our church family remains strong.
If you know someone who would appreciate a visit, a pastoral call, or a gift from our Prayer Shawl Ministry, please contact the church office at 732-491-2300.

On the last Wednesday of the month, from 12PM-3PM in the Social Center, the Deacons host an afternoon of board games. All are welcome to attend! Bring a bag lunch and your favorite board or card game. Games are also provided. If you need a ride, please call the church office.
Medical Equipment Ministry
We keep a limited number of medical equipment pieces to lend to those in need. We often have wheelchairs, walkers, bedside commodes, shower chairs, canes, and knee scooters. We do not have large, specialized items like electric wheelchairs and hospital beds. We occasionally have or can accept other smaller items; please reach out to discuss.
